General

Rune Magic relies on runes of various forms as a fundamental element of its workings. It serves as a kind of bridge between Resonance Magic and Narrative Magic, wherein the rune is charged with magical potential and then applied, allowing it to unleash its effects.

Technique

The use of runes often carries a spiritual connotation and therefore relies on the conceptual, i.e., attributed meaning of symbols, whether from cultural backgrounds or personal convictions. The inherent conceptual magical potential therein can be transferred onto the rune through various means and continues to exert its influence through them, which constitutes the connection to resonance magic.

Runes can also be altered in their form, which also affects their efficacy.

Example

An example of its application comes from natural philosophy, where practitioners use runes to grasp certain natural phenomena and, through further adaptation of the runes, give them a distinct, comprehensible form. This particular practice traces back to the Westwind Tribes among the Old Ones.1

Boundaries

The power of the runes depends on the skill of their creator and cannot exceed their significance. If the user does not comprehend a phenomenon, they can hardly bind it to a rune. Furthermore, the power of an individual rune diminishes over time, requiring it to be re-inscribed. This allows for the continued use of the same symbol, but not of the same physical representation.
