General

The term "Shards of the Past" refers to entities or phenomena that appear to defy magical laws either wholly or partially. The Shards denote a period during which such beings supposedly held particular prominence. The exact timeframe of this era remains in the uncertain, with the majority of later scholars finding themselves at a loss for knowledge about it. Even within the Old Empire, information about this period was limited.

The era has been designated to span from approximately 15000 to 4000 B.I.D.

Etymology

The term originated from the Old Ones, who employed it to characterize entities or objects exhibiting behaviors divergent from the expected norms dictated by natural laws of magic. Referred to as "Shards of the Past," these phenomena are believed by the Old Ones to be vestiges of an ancient era, where alternative laws might have prevailed, or where a more sophisticated utilization of magic could have disrupted or altered the established laws as known today.

Facts Known

The precise nature of these Shards remains largely elusive, as the term could encompass virtually any incomprehensible, albeit potentially natural, phenomenon. Additionally, the majority of the Old Ones appear either disinclined to discuss the matter or lack knowledge regarding it altogether. Indeed, not all Old Ones acknowledge the existence of these Shards, and only a minority claim firsthand experience of their origin.
